Mexico: Civil society groups to demonstrate in multiple cities May 5

Civil society groups to demonstrate in cities across Mexico May 5. Heightened security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Civil society organizations plan to demonstrate in cities across Mexico on May 5. The purpose of the action is to denounce growing violence. Participation will likely vary by location, with the largest gatherings occurring in major urban areas, such as Chilpancingo, Guerrero, and Mexico City. In Chilpancingo, participants will gather at the Nicholas Bravo Statue at 10:00 before marching to the Zocalo. In Mexico City, on the other hand, activists will rally at the monument to the revolution from 14:00. A related demonstration will take place in Queretaro City although organizers have as yet released no details concerning the specific location or start time.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all rally sites and march routes. Participants could gather outside government buildings and on major thoroughfares. Clashes between police and participants cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators become overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Avoid the protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating near impacted areas. Seek alternative routes to circumvent any related transport disruptions. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed the instructions of authorities.
